Mount Holyoke College is a liberal arts college for women in South Hadley, which is a town in Hampshire County, in the US state of Massachusetts, with a population estimated at a number of more than 17 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
The college was founded in 1837, as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, by Mary Lyon, considered by many scholars to be an educational innovator in the area of women's education. In 1888 the Seminary received its collegiate charter and became Mount Holyoke Seminary and College, in 1893, the institution's current name being adopted.
Mount Holyoke College offers its students 49 departmental and interdepartmental majors, including the option to design a special major, the primary degree conferred being the bachelor of arts (BA) degree, the college also offering a master's degree in psychology.
Mount Holyoke's athletic teams are known as the Lions and they compete in 14 varsity sports, in NCAA Division III, the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), and the NERC (the New England Rowing Conference).
